Chapter 5

Battle Joined Storm rubbed his tired eyes and handed another sunstone to Clarke who put it in the containment unit. “One more and this one will be filled.”

“How many does that leave?” Jason asked. “Six more units. I don’t know how you’re going to manage. Storm here is exhausted. He’s been doing this for more than a day now. He needs sleep.”

Benjames set another empty containment unit down. “We still don’t even know if they’re going to work.”

“They’ll work or they won’t,” Jason replied. “Either way we’re not letting the people off that ship do as they please here, even if I have to go inside that ship and kill until they get the idea trying to take our world from us is a bad plan.”

Riversong set her hand on the Dragon’s shoulder. “Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to that.”

“Yes,” Clarke agreed. “Let’s hope they see reason and give up their insane plan of conquest and destruction.”

“They give it up or they die,” Jason stated harshly and handed Clarke a sunstone he’d just finished. It too went into the containment unit.

“That’s got it,” he said and closed the lid. He passed it to Benjames who carried it off to install it in one of the defense machines.

“How are you holding up, Stormdragon?” Jason asked him.

“I’m tired. Really tired,” he admitted. “I don’t know if I can make many more.” “No choice, there,” Jason told him. “I can’t make more than two at a time.” The Dragon set down the two globes of stone he’d been about to charge and grasped Storm’s wrist. Power flowed from Jason, an iridescent glow that shimmered over his hand, up his arm. It felt like sunlight and fond memories, like friends long gone but not forgotten, of parental love and the emptiness and sorrow of centuries spent alone. Tears burned in Storm’s eyes and he met the brilliant blue gaze of the Dragon finally understanding so many things, grateful he had Flame to spend eternity with because the loneliness he felt from the Dragon nearly overwhelmed him.

“I...” he began, but couldn’t find words to express his sympathy for a being unable to die who had no companion to love and cherish him.

Jason shook his head. “I chose to remain here as the Guardian of Dragonhope. I knew I’d be alone, and that was my choice too. Don’t think I haven’t known love and joy. I have. More than most men ever do.” The hand on his tightened for a brief instant as even more of the older Immortal’s immense power sank into him, sang in his flesh, hummed through his nerves, his veins until Storm felt his skin should be glowing.

Storm nodded, but the echo of that pain, that unending aloneness had left an indelible ghost of that hurt inside Storm. He would never forget how it felt to be so very old and have been alone most of that time. The only bright points in the Dragon’s existence were memories of people he’d known.
